Biographical/Historical Note

Madame Gouvain was born May 7, 1777 in Treguier, Brittany. Her first husband, Ange De la Perriere was a general in the French Army. Her sister, the Countess De Vue De Villars, was maid of honor to the Empress Josephine at Malmaison after Napoleon had divorced her. She was the aunt of General Bolivar, the South American patriot, for whom Bolivia was named, and she had been much in the society of the most distinguished people of her day and generation.
