Biographical/Historical Note

The Temperance Movement in the Unites States began in the late 18th century. It found many supporters among women, young children, and religious elements of society. Its followers attributed a variety of ills to the consumption of alcohol, including family abandonment, slovenliness, poor health, and physical abusiveness. The culmination of the Temperance Movement in the US was the ratification of the 18th amendment in 1919, which became known as the era of Prohibition. The 22nd amendment, ratified in 1933, repealed the Prohibition regulations and made alcohol sales and consumption legal again in the United States. The Temperance Movement in the Unites States began in the late 18th century.
