|Abstract:||The collection consists of the papers of Edward Harden and other Harden and Jackson family members of Savannah and Athens, Georgia from 1779-1928. Materials relating to Edward Harden include indentures, receipts, account books (1836-1842) for his law practice, and common place books (1805, 1830-1837) containing accounts for his plantations, legal notes, and journal entries describing his daily activities. The collection also includes diaries (1864-1928, with gaps) of Harden's great-niece, Eveline Harden Jackson, describing her school days, social activities, the Civil War, and news of family and friends and a diary (1892) of Harden's great great-niece Elizabeth Carithers, detailing her social activities, church, and family news.|
Edward Harden (1784-1849) was a lawyer, planter, soldier, judge, and Georgia Senator, and resided in Savannah and Athens, Georgia. Other family members include Harden's great-niece Evaline Harden Jackson (1848-1928) and great great-niece Elizabeth Carithers (b. 1874).
This collection contains the letters, receipts, autographs, commissions, deeds, diaries, scrapbooks, etc. of the Edward Harden family of Athens, Clarke County, Georgia. Harden was a planter and politician from Savannah and Athens. Along with his papers, the collection contains diaries, etc. of his wife, Mary Ann Elizabeth Randolph, their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Greenhill Harden, and of Edward Harden Jr.'s children. Also included are diaries, etc. of Harden's great-niece Evelyn Harden Jackson, and his great great-niece Elizabeth Carithers. Scrapbooks and other materials relate to the Lucy Cobb Institute and several Athens residents.
The diaries included have also been preserved on microform.
