|Abstract:||The collection consists of a letter written by Jacob Phinizy to W. B. Barnett of Athens concerning the sale of Phinizy's land. The letter is dated August 18, 1890 and was written on the letterhead paper of Phinizy & Co.- Cotton Factors, Augusta, Ga. The collection also contains a covering letter from Dr. Coulter and information about a Demosthenian Literary Society medal (1875) which was presented to the library in 1945, by Dr. Phinizy Calhoun. This medal was won by Jacob Phinizy who was the uncle of Dr. Calhoun.|
Jacob Phinizy II (1857-1924) was born in Athens (Ga.). After graduation from UGA he entered the cotton firm of Phinizy & Co. in Augusta (Ga.). He was president of Georgia RR & Banking Co. 1897-1924 and mayor of Augusta 1901-1903. He owned a home in Augusta names "Circular Court" and married Vannie Gartrell, Mary Foster, and Sarah Dunbar Martin consecutively but had no children.
