Nunnally Hunter Johnson (1897-1977) born in Columbus, Georgia, was first a journalist and writer of short stories. He later moved to Hollywood where he worked as a scriptwriter and everntually a writer, producer, and director of motion pictures. He wrote the Tobacco Road screenplay for the movie released in 1941. The screenplay was adapted from Erskine Caldwell's novel and Jack Kirkland's play of the same name.
