Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Erwin James Eldridge (1833-1902) was a surgeon with the 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment and then with Cobb's Legion, serving in Virginia and Georgia. He married Emma Ronaldson and resided in Flat Pond (Lee County) and Americus (Sumter County) Georgia.


Scope and Content Note

Two letters from Eldridge to his wife that discuss his clothing, religious beliefs, duty to serve, and their expected baby. He mentions describing a fight (Yorktown) in a previous letter and says the enemy is "in close proximity."
