Abstract: | The collection consists of the papers of Barnard Elliot Habersham from 1812-1862. The papers consist primarily of correspondence to Barnard from his father, Richard W. Habersham, his mother Sarah Elliot Habersham, his sister Catherine Elliot Habersham, his sister-in-law Harriet E. Mathewes, his brothers Alexander Wylly Habersham and Francis Barnard Habersham, and his grandmother, C. Elliot. Of particular interest are letters to Barnard from his father regarding national affairs (1840-1842) written while he was serving in the U.S. Congress; family letters describing epidemics of cholera (1834) and yellow fever (1854) in Savannah; and letters from his son, Robert, describing his travels to Barbadoes and South America. |

Barnard Elliot Habersham was the son of Richard Wylly Habersham and Mary Hazzard Elliot of Savannah of Clarkesville, Georgia. He married Emma Mathewes, of Charleston. Their children were Ella, Robert, Richard, and Frank.
