Biographical/Historical Note

Marcellus Stanley (1823-1890) was an Athens farmer and teacher who served as the captain of Troop Artillery Battery during the Civil War.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of correspondence, documents, printed material, images, and a carte de visite album from the Stanley family. These items pertain to an examination at the school where he taught, post-war business and estate matters, and other daily domestic affairs. The images included are of family members and friends/acquaintenances. Some of the images appear to depict professors from the University of Georgia from during and just after the war.
