Richard R. Wright, Sr. (1855-1947) served as a soldier in the Spanish-American war. During the war, he was promoted to the position of paymaster for the United States Volunteers, and was the first African American to hold that position. After the war, Wright served as the first president of Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth, now Savannah State University.
