Biographical/Historical Note

William E. Franklin was a 2nd lieutenant in Company L, 51st Infantry, 6th Division in World War I. He wrote his mother, Mrs. L. W. Franklin, in Odessadale or Stovall in Meriwether County, Georgia. Franklin was stationed in Camp Forrest (Ga.) and Camp Mills (NY) and then sent to France. His letters describe camp life and his desire "to get in the fray."


Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of correspondence, military papers, and photographs. Of the six letters, four are from Franklin to his mother, Mrs. L. W. Franklin, in Odessadale or Stovall in Meriwether County, Georgia. Franklin was stationed in Camp Forrest (Ga.) and Camp Mills (NY) and then sent to France. His letters describe camp life and his desire "to get in the fray." The military papers include equipment requests and lists, pay allotment, and a 1919 list of offiers in the 3rd Battalion, 111 Army Composite Regiment, whihc included Franklin. The photographs are of Franklin and other soldiers, including training camp at Fort Oglethorpe in 1917. There are also scrapbook pages with photographs of cyclone damage in Chipley, Georgia in 1908.
