The collection consists of a group of 150 letters written to George A. Horkan from his scattered family in Georgia, Texas, California, the Yukon, and Swinford, County Mayo, Ireland. The letters are divided into four groups. The first group contains letters written by J. F. Horkan in Texas describing his business dealings. The second group of letters was written by William Horkan in California and the Yukon describing his business attempts and wanderings. The third group is made up of letters written by P. D. Horkan on the stationary of P. D. Horkan and Co. Wholesale and Retail Dry Goods in Augusta, Georgia. They contain news on family and business matters. The fourth group of letters contains news from family members (mother/sisters/niece) remaining in Swinford, County Mayo, Ireland. The letters relay family news and frequently ask for money. Included in the group is the mother's deathbed letter to her son.
