Born in Rockford Illinois in 1913, Marjorie Henning Montgomery grew up in New York City and Connecticut. became involved in research for her father, Albin Henning, who was a distinguished illustrator. Her research fired a curiosity that led to a career in fashion and theater costume design. She married Arthur Montgomery in 1943 and they traveled the world together. After his retirement in 1976 they settled briefly in many places, including Europe, Seattle, and Carmel California, and eventually in Charleston, South Carolina. Marjorie Montgomery continued painting watercolors long into her later years.
The collection consists of 23 original painted costume designs by Marjorie H. Montgomery, as well as 9 issues of the Illustrated London News. Over 100 theater related books and various issues of other popular magazines were donated with the collection but have been placed with Hargrett's Rare Books department.
