The Southern Mutual Insurance Company was incorporated on 29 December 1847, in Athens, GA. In 1855 the Company discontinued the departments of life insurance, marine insurance and insurance of slaves as property and adopted the plan of requiring cash premiums and making annual dividends to policy holders. Originally governed by a 15-member Board of Directors, 10 of whom were to be residents of Athens or the vicinity, the Company is still in business.
The collection consists of servants registers, storage and marine registers, fire registers, annual reports, directors' minutes, loss reports, fire insurance applications and various other items.
