Dr. Erwin James Eldridge (1833-1902) was a surgeon with 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and then Cobb's Legion, serving in Virginia and then in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia, during the Civil War. He married Emma Ronaldson. He resided in Flat Pond (Lee County) and then Americus (Sumter County) Georgia.
The collection consists of letters between Dr. E. J. Eldridge and his wife, Emma, while he served as a surgeon with the 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment and later with Cobb's Legion from 1861-1865. His letters tell of his duties and they often give descriptions of battles, including Fredericksburg in Virginia, and the Atlanta Campaign (1864). Emma's letters discuss family and political issues.
