Eleanor Pricilla Barrow Williams (1886-1977) was the daughter of David C. Barrow, Jr. (the chancellor of the University of Georgia). She married Henry Lee Jewett Williams (1887-1918), who was killed in action in France during World War I. The collection deals mainly with her life before her marriage and after her husband's death. Their daughter Eleanor Barrow Jewett Williams (1917-1956) married Gustav Karow in 1941.
Scope and Content Note
The Eleanor Priscilla Barrow Williams Collection consists of 5 boxes. Box 1 contains folders 1:1-1:7. Folder 1:1 contains biographical information about Eleanor Williams. Folder 1:2 contains correspondence dating from 1893-1909. Folder 1:3 contains correspondence from her European trips in 1910 and 1912. She and her cousin, Clara Elizabeth Barrow, went on a tour of Europe during the summer of 1910. They were chaperoned by Miss Claudia Fink, a teacher at the Lucy Cobb Institute. Folders 1:4-1:6 contain more personal correspondence dated 1913-1954. Folder 1:7 contains mainly letters of sympathy written to Mrs. Williams after the death of her daughter, Eleanor Barrow Jewett Williams, in a 1956 drowning accident. Box 2 contains folders 2:1-2:3. Folders 2:1-2:2 contain personal correspondence dated 1957-1976. Folder 2:3 contains business correspondence. Mrs. Williams destroyed most of the correspondence with her husband. Box 3 contains folders 3:1-3:6. Folder 3:1 contains banking and investment items. Folder 3:2 contains several business documents and papers. Folder 3:3 contains insurance papers. Folder 3:4 contains receipts and bills. Folders 3:5-3:6 contain photograph negatives. Box 4 contains folders 4:1-4:4. Folder 4:1 contains address books and lists. Folders 4:2-4:3 contain business ledgers. Folder 4:4 contains 3 diaries, one written during her European trip in 1910, one dated 1930-1934, and one dated 1935-1939. Box 5 contains folders 5:1-5:3, which all contain material about Mrs. Williams' daughter, Eleanor Barrow Jewett Williams. Folder 5:1 contains biographical information. Folder 5:2 contains a business ledger and tax form. Folder 5:3 contains personal correspondence, some dating after her marriages to Gustav Karow, whom she divorced, and to Bill Ruthruff.
