This collection consists of a document explaining the apprenticeship of Judy Smith. Judy, a 10-year-old former slave, was found abandoned and she was thus conscripted into an apprenticeship until she was 18. This appears to be an example of a standard 19th century contract between slave owners and slaves.
The collection consists of an article of apprenticeship dated September 16, 1868 between J. L. Peterson and a 10-year-old African-American girl, abandoned by her parents, named Judy Smith. The agreement would be in effect until Smith turned 18.
