Biographical/Historical Note

This envelope appears to be from the late 1800s. It seems likely that S. P. Thurmond is Samuel P. Thurmond, a colonel and the Solicitor General of the Executive Department of Georgia during the Civil War. S.P. Thurmond was a prominent lawyer and Athenian. He was self-educated and strong-willed. Over his years in law and politics, he gained prominence and wealth. He died in 1887.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of one envelope, addressed to S.P. Thurmond, Jefferson, Georgia, with a flowery University of Georgia emblem in place of a return address.
