The Athens Art Association began in 1919 when Laura Blackshear realized the community needed a visual arts outlet. It was rapidly successful. In 1958, the Athens Art Association started sidewalk sales at the Beechwood Shopping Center. In 1962, the organization sponsored an exhibit of Israeli art. The Athens Art Association also sponsors "The Art Cart" at St. Mary's Hospital. Blackshear passed away in 1967 at 91, but the organization has continued to thrive. In 1984, the Athens Art Association celebrated its 65th anniversary.
The collection consists of 1 bound volume: "Celebrating our 65th anniversary, the Athens Art Association unfolds the past: selected documents from archives portray a historical panorama of the rise of Athens Art Association and its activities... we honor our heritage and express gratitude to all individuals, friends, institutions and organizations near and far for preserving the past and promoting the arts during a time span of 65 years."
