James Rhind married Mary Gardener (1815-1851); their children included Colden Rhind (1849-1911) and Margeret Rhind (born 1838). Margeret married William Stokes and their children included Sarah Gardner Stokes (born 1860) and James Rhind Stokes (1865-1929). The Rhind family resided in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia.
Margeret and William both lived through the Civil War, and their correspondence reflects the time period and the conflict experience.
The collection consists of papers of the Rhind / Stokes families from 1813-1949. It includes family correspondence from 1853-1949, letter books from 1850 - 1917, business papers from 1813-1936, including indentures, receipts and equitable securities. Also included are ledger books from 1886-1887 and 1913-1914. There are undated family photos a diary by Sarah Stokes from 1910 and two scrapbooks (both filled with clippings, mostly poetry and illustrations from magazines), one by Sarah Stokes from 1875 and an undated one apparently created by Catherine Gardner White.
