Abstract:The collection consists of original source material collected by E. Merton Coulter which dates from ca. 1754-1920. The materials include correspondence of individuals and families, Coulter's transcriptions of articles and soldier's letters published in Southern newspapers during the Civil War, court records from Jackson County (Ga.), individual Civil War letters, and extensive correspondence of Edwin King Lumpkin, Joseph Henry Lumpkin, William L. Mitchell, and Howell Cobb dispersed throughout the collection.

Biographical/Historical Note

Ellis Merton Coulter (1890-1981) was born in Catawba County, North Carolina. After enrolling in schools such as the University of North Carolina and the University of Wisconsin, Coulter began teaching at the University of Georgia in 1919. He became head of the history department in 1941 and retired as professor emeritus in 1958.

The collection consists of papers of William Montague Browne of Athens, Georgia from 1864-1880. The papers consist of correspondence mainly from Browne to Howell Cobb Jr. and William L. Mitchell containing mostly family news and financial dealings. The collection also contains a letter (1864) from Mary Ann Cobb to Howell Cobb and another to Browne regarding Union troops near Athens, an address (1882) by Browne to the Superior Court memorializing the late Dr. William L. Mitchell, and an extract from the minutes of a faculty meeting at the University of Georgia also regarding Mitchell.
William Montague Browne (1823-1883), Brigadier-General on the staff of President Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America, later moved to Athens (Ga.) and became professor of history and political economy at the University of Georgia.

The collection consists of papers of Howell Cobb from 1861-1868. The papers include correspondence and telegrams to Cobb pertaining to the Civil War and administration of the Confederate government. The telegrams mainly contain brief notes on troop movements, battles or skirmishes, and casualties in Georgia particularly during the Atlanta Campaign. The correspondence discusses cotton production and trade for the Confederacy, conscriptions, black market trading by Georgia citizens, Reconstruction government, and the 1868 presidential election. The collection also contains letters (1865) between Howell Cobb Jr. and Mary McKinley before their marriage and a manuscript (1892) written by John O. Waddell detailing his experiences at Crampton’s Gap (Md.) during the Civil War.
Howell Cobb (1815-1868), lawyer and politician, resided in Athens, Georgia.

The papers consist of correspondence from several members of the Jackson family who served in Georgia Confederate units during the Civil War. Letters from Dr. John F. Jackson (a surgeon in the 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment) describe the battles and aftermath at 2nd Bull Run and Fredericksburg; Thomas G. Jackson (of the Peyton Artillery) writes in 1861 from Yorktown (Va.) and discusses the actions of General John Magruder; D.R. Mitchell of Rome (Ga.) writes to Henry Rootes Jackson (Oct. 1863) regarding the fortification of Rome; and Joseph Jackson writes from Richmond (1865) regarding the distribution of money when Richmond was evacuated.

The series consists of correspondence of James Thomas from 1859-1864. The letters discuss Thomas’ law practice, sale of slaves, farming during the Civil War, slave insurrections, administration of the Confederate government, substitutions for military service, prices of commodities, and Sherman’s march through Georgia. Of particular interest is a letter (September 6, 1861) to Thomas from Thomas H. Latimer with the 15th Georgia Infantry Regiment describing the Battle at Munson’s Hill (Va.). The series also contains a group of letters (1863-1864) from George W. Warthen of the 28th Georgia Infantry Regiment describing a skirmish on Morris Island (S.C.), life in the army, his wounds, and his stay in the hospital. Other correspondents include Alexander H. Stephens and James B. Ransom.
