Biographical/Historical Note

Ellis Merton Coulter (1890-1981) was born in Catawba County, North Carolina. After enrolling in schools such as the University of North Carolina and the University of Wisconsin, Coulter began teaching at the University of Georgia in 1919. He became head of the history department in 1941 and retired as professor emeritus in 1958.

Scope and Content Note

Through the years of his life, Coulter created a collection of pamphlets, books and articles which grew in number as he grew older. Some of the items were, "hand me downs," from his father's collection. What is unique about this collection is that it was arranged by Coulter himself.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject heading, beginning with Agriculture and Mineralogy and ending with World War II. There are thirty one subject headings under which approximately 1070 items are categorized. These items are alphabetized by author's last name and/or the first word of the title.

Much of the collection deals with topics pertaining to Georgia and the South, however the subject headings WWI, American History and Railroads contain numerous interesting pamphlets. The Biography and Historiography sections contain well written pamphlets about distinguished individuals. Under the WWI heading are several fascinating pamphlets put out by the War Information Series dealing with different aspects of the war. Included in this section is a gruesome pictorial entitled "The Horror of It All".

Although there are some original articles dating from the mid-1800s, many of the items are reprints. Since the items are categorized in alphabetical order under the proper headings, it is fairly easy to find the information needed. However, some of the headings are very broad and therefore present a problem because some of the items fit under more than one heading.

Arrangement

Arranged by subject heading, alphabetically.
