Biographical/Historical Note

Michael Bishop, prominent Georgia Science-fiction writer, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1945. The son of an enlisted man in the United States Air Force, he has lived in such varied places as South Carolina, Kansas, Tokyo, Japan and Seville, Spain. He attended college at the University of Georgia where he received his BA in English in 1967 and his MA the following year. After receiving his Masters, he taught English at the United States Air Force Preparatory School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1970 Bishop made his first professional sale with the short story "Pinon Fall," which appeared in the October 1970 issue of Galaxy Magazine. He returned to Athens in 1972 where he taught English at the University of Georgia until 1974. He and his family then moved to Pine Mountain, Georgia where they presently reside. In 1983 Michael Bishop won the Nebula award for best novel with his book, No Enemy But Time.

Scope and Content Note

The Michael Bishop Papers consist primarily of drafts, final versions, and galley proofs of his work to date. Included are short stories, novels, essays, speeches and notes. Also included are correspondence and published materials both by and about Bishop.

The various drafts of his stories and novels indicate how much of writing is really rewriting, as page after page is filled with changes, emendations, and strike-throughs. The ability to see how his mind works as he writes is invaluable in understanding the work of this award-winning writer.

The correspondence is both business-related and personal. The 'family' of science-fiction is both wide and deep, and, as such, those persons with whom Bishop corresponds are often friends as well as colleagues. Over the years Bishop corresponded with most of the giants of science fiction including Philip K. Dick, Gene Wolfe, Robert Silverberg, Kate Wilhelm, Damon Knight, Ray Bradbury and Ian Watson. In addition to personal letters, there are also letters from fans.

Included among the additional unarranged accessions is material to that above, drafts, galleys and proofs of Bishop's work, as well as related correspondence, awards, magazines that include his work, and conference programs.
