Biographical/Historical Note

John William Nicholson was born March 24, 1824 in Wilkes County, Georgia. He was married to Martha Matilda Gartrell and had nine children. He spent his life working in farming, manufacturing and finances. He was a builder and owner with Grady and Nicholson, Athens Gas Works, owner and operator of the Pioneering Paper Mills near Athens, member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Mutual Fire Insurance Company and director for 12 years until his death. He was one of the original charter members and stockowners of the the Athens National Bank of Athens. He died on April 30, 1886.
