|Abstract:||The collection consists of papers of the William Jones family of Augusta, Georgia from 1813-1910. Includes correspondence; account books, financial records, and receipts relating to Jones' cotton gin business (1833-1857); freedmen contracts; and legal papers relating to Jones' duties as executor of Marshall Keith's estate and guardian of the Keith children. The correspondence, mainly to William Jones, pertains to business matters, his guardianship of the Keith children, and family matters. Correspondents include Sarah Jane Jones Griffin, Arthur W. Jones, William H. Jones, and Sophie Jones. The early materials (1813-1863) pertain to the Isham Keith family and contain correspondence between Isham, Marshall, and Peter Keith.|

Scope and Content Note
This collection contains primarily the correspondence of the Keith family of Augusta and the correspondence of William Jones as executor of the estate of Marshall Keith. Included is correspondence dating from 1813 to 1910-from Marshall Keith, his brother Peter Keith of Alexandria, Va., Isham Keith, also of Va., William Jones and others. Many letters involve debts owed to Mr. Jones as executor of the Keith estate and his guardianship of the Keith children.
The correspondence of Mr. Jones which relates to his gin-making business is placed separately in the collection. These letters date from 1833 to 1857.
Also included are statements and receipts of Mr. Jones' business transactions.
Box 7 of the collection contains various items including guardianship papers of Judith Keith (daughter of Marshall), letters from ex-slaves of Marshall Keith, freedman contracts with slaves, account books, etc.
