Biographical/Historical Note

Levin Wailes was a native of Maryland, born on March 9, 1768. He married Eleanor Davis on October 28, 1796; the couple had nine children. Wailes was a sailor, a police clerk, and later a surveyor. Wailes, performed several important land surveys in Georgia between 1800 and 1805 and then moved to Mississippi. He was also the uncle of Edward Lloyd Thomas, another notable Georgia land surveyor.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of copies of correspondence from the U. S. General Land Office concerning Wailes' surveys in the state of Mississippi. The originals are located in the Public Lands Division, Secretary of State, Mississippi.
