|Abstract:||The collection consists of an account book for a general store, saw mill, and grist mill in Clinton and Macon, Georgia owned by John C. Carter from 1831-1836. Ledger entries include the customer's name, item purchased, and price pertaining to sales of food, household goods, furniture, and lumber. Additional entries relate to the hire of slaves for work, IOUs for cash or materials, Carter's practice of using peddlers to sell watches, and grist mill business. The ledger also contains lists of persons receiving meal, usually soldiers crippled for life, widows, or orphans of soldiers, or aged and infirm people.|
