Biographical/Historical Note

James Henry Lane (1833-1907), a Virginian by birth and education, received his commission as brigadier general in the Army of Northern Virginia in 1862. After the war he taught at several institutions, most particularly the Alabama Polytechnic Institute from 1882-1907.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of one letter, written by James H. Lane, dated 26 October 1898 and addressed to Charles Edgeworth Jones. In it, Lane discusses the Battle of Chancellorsville in which he was a participant and the role of Stonewall Jackson.
