Biographical/Historical Note

On December 24, 1837, Ebenezer Strahan married Sarah Brown Holmes. Ebenezer Strahan was from Baltimore, Md. Ebenezer Strahan was educated in England for the ministry, though he did not follow this calling. He was a thorough student of Greek and Hebrew languages and at one time translated for his own use the New Testament from the Greek and Hebrew bibles. Their marriage resulted in ten children. Cornelius Lawrence Ludlow Leary, a Representative from Maryland; born in Baltimore, Md., October 22, 1813; attended the public schools; was graduated from St. Mary's College, Baltimore, in 1833; moved to Louisville, Ky.; returned to Baltimore in 1837; Whig member of the State house of delegates in 1838 and 1839; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced practice in Baltimore; presidential elector on the American Party ticket in 1856; elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1863); resumed the practice of law in Baltimore, Md., and died there March 21, 1893; interment in Lorraine Cemetery. Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of a four page deed from Cornelius S. S. (L. L.?) Leary to Ebenezer Strahan concerning land situate in Baltimore, Maryland. Strahan was the progenitor of the Athens, Georgia, family, this his association expands the interest in this document. It is dated 26 March 1853. Also in pencil at the head of page four are notations of genealogical interest relating to the Strahan family.
