Biographical/Historical Note

John Morgan Smith was born August 9, 1842 in Columbus, Georgia. A member of the University of Georgia class of 1862, he was a member of the Demosthenian Society. He left college before graduating to join the Confederate Army, becoming a lieutenant in the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company A. After the war, he served as the mayor of Talladega, Alabama for two terms, practiced law and later became a merchant. His brother was Hampton S. Smith.


Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of one college badge from the University of Georgia. It is capped by a five-pointed star, reads "Pro Virtute et Patria," and dates from 1859.
