John Murrell was born in North Carolina in 1784. He married Margaret Sasser in 1804 while both lived in North Carolina. However, he, his wife, and their seven children left for Arkansas in 1818 and moved to Louisiana soon after. They were the first to settle in future Claiborne Parish in Louisiana in the 1820s. John Murrell and his family accomplished many firsts for the region: they established the first school in the area, the first Protestant services were held in his home, he was the first postmaster in North Louisiana uplands, and their home was the first courthouse when Claiborne Parish was created in 1828. John died in January 1847 in Louisiana.
The collection consists of the family tree of John Murrell (born in Bladen County, N.C. in 1784) and Margaret Sasser. There is a synopsis sheet which goes back four additional generations, spanning from 1653-1975.
