The collection consists of muster rolls and pay vouchers relating to enrollment in the Confederate States of America military service during the American Civil War. In almost all cases the units are from Georgia, with most relating to Cobb's Legion and the Athens area. Includes muster rolls, pay vouchers, authorizations, and settlements.
Cobb's Legion was also known as the Georgia Legion in the American Civil War. It was led by Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb and raised in the summer of 1861. A legion was a military unit with a single commander but consisted of several components such as infantry, cavalry, and artillery. Cobb's Legion fought many major battles, including Yorktown, Seven Days Battles, Sharpsbrug, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, among others. They surrendered at the Appomattox Court House in April of 1865.
This collection consists of documents, payrolls, musters and other material (both originals and photocopies) relating to enrollment in the Confederate States military service.. The information contained herein is invaluable in researching Confederate enlistments and actual membership in various military units. In almost all cases the units are from Georgia with most relating to Cobb's Legion and the Athens area.
Collection includes items acquired through gifts and purchases as well as those of unknown provenance, which have been combined into one collection.
