|Abstract:||The collection consists of papers of John Ray from 1829-1867. Includes deeds, receipts, bills, slave bills of sale, sales of cotton, tax records, an account book and a plantation book. The account book contains listings of debts collected by Ray as an attorney (1831-1844). The plantation book (1839-1861) contains lists of slaves and the distribution of clothes, rations, and blankets for White Oak Plantation; notes on legal decisions; and recipes for various illnesses including heart disease, measles, rheumatism, pneumonia, scarlet fever, asthma, etc.|
