Biographical/Historical Note

George Wymberley Jones De Renne (1827-1880), planter and bibliophile, (son of George Jones (1766-1838), physician), was known for his collection of over 1300 volumes collected from 1844-1861; most of this collection pertained to Georgia history. He had three children with his wife Mary Wallace Nuttall De Renne: Wymberley Jones De Renne (1853-1916), Letitia De Renne (1860-1890), and Kentwyn De Renne (1862-1891), who continued their father's legacy of collecting and printing books related to Georgia's history. Wymberley Jones De Renne married Laura Norris and their children included Wymberley Wormsloe De Renne (b. 1891) and Elfrida De Renne (Barrow).

For more information, see the article "De Renne Family" in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of miscellaneous letters, notes, and documents collected by the De Renne family pertaining almost wholly to historical figures important in the development of Georgia as a colony and state. It excludes all relevant Confederate materials which are listed separately as MS 1135.

Although not all items are of great historical importance (a few being retained for autographs alone), several are of special significance, including letters of Pierce Butler (30 March 1803) to Aaron Burr, William A. Bowles (15 February 1799) to Lord Townshend, and Thomas Savage (14 December 1775). An extended correspondence between George G. Smith and W. J. DeRenne from 1903-1908 is included. Two important letters from John McPherson Berrien to George Jones are present as well. There is also an "abstract of the muster rolls" of the companies of Captains Thomas Morris, George Young, and Dufar Peyrett taken 26 August and 2 September 1778. The extended legal briefs of Maria and Frederick Campbell Stewart with other legal materials form part of this collection. Dr. Harney's famous "Farewell to Savannah" and correspondence pertaining to it are present as well. Some of the individuals included are as follows: John McPherson Berrien, Joseph E. Brown, James Bulloch, W. J. DeRenne, George Rockingham Gilmer, and Edward Telfair.
