Alexander, Hardee, Hill, Longstreet, Stephens and Toombs were all prominent Confederate figures in the United States Civil War, many of whom became involved in politics thereafter.
The collection consists of miscellaneous letters collected by the De Renne family that pertain to a variety of individuals who were active participants in the cause of the Confederacy. There are some letters from the war years, but the majority are letters of reminiscence and anecdotes from the post-war period; a few individuals are represented only by images or signatures on documents. Historically, the letters vary widely in content and importance. Some of the people included in this collection are: Edward Porter Alexander, William J. Hardee, Benjamin Harvey Hill, James Longstreet, Alexander Hamilton Stephens, and Robert Toombs.
