The Brumby Chair Company was established in 1875 in Marietta, Georgia by James Remley Brumby and Major Henry Myers. Brumby soon asked for his young brother, Thomas M. Brumby, to assist his new business, and they formed Brumby & Brother. In 1884, the company incorporated into the Brumby Chair Company.
Thomas Brumby significantly helped Marietta grow: he was twice its mayor, he helped organize the Marietta Electric Company and the Marietta Bank and Trust, and served as a chairman on the building committee of the First Methodist Church and the Marietta School Board. His son, Thomas Brumby Jr., continued the tradition of aiding the community while fostering the Brumby Chair Company business. However, at his death in 1938, none of his sons were old enough to run the company, so Thomas Brumby Jr's brother, Robert Brumby, left his work in Louisiana to lead the business.
Due to World War II, much had to change in the Brumby Chair Company: their product line was reduced, employees were laid off, and business fell. In 1944, the factory closed and was sold to an Ohio company.
In 1972, Frank and Carole Melson produced the Brumby Rocking Chair under a license. When Carole Melson retired in 1991, Brumby Chair Co. President Otis Brumby, Jr., the youngest grandson of founder Thomas M. Brumby, obtained permission from the five family members who owned the Brumby trademark and reopened the Brumby Chair Company in 1992 in Marietta Square. As of the 2010s, the company continues to ship worldwide.
