Biographical/Historical Note

The Georgia Experiment Station was founded in 1888 as a result of the federal Hatch Act of 1887 which established a national network of agricultural experiment stations. Located on the former Bates Farm in Griffin, Georgia (Spalding County), the station has played an important role toward improving Georgia citizens' living standards through the development and growth of modern agricultural practices. Early research at the Station focused on fertilizers and soil erosion but eventually a complete program of agricultural and environmental science research developed. Today research centers on: crop and pest management, food safety and quality, environment and natural resources, urban agriculture and applied plant genetics.
